Can I Replace My Own Fuel Lines?
Replacing your own fuel lines is a repair job you can do on your vehicle with a basic set of tools and a little know-how. The parts are not expensive, and you can save hundreds of dollars on labor and other charges by doing the work yourself.
That said, there are some things to consider before tackling the job, including ensuring you have the right instructions and resources. That's where LinesToGo comes in. We carry quality fuel lines at low prices and have everything you need to help you tackle the job yourself.
Fuel Line Installation Costs
At a repair shop, much of the cost to replace your fuel lines is due to labor and fees for recycling or disposal. Doing the work yourself typically requires a few hours but can save you hundreds of dollars because all you pay for are parts and the tools to do the job.
Most of our fuel line sets cost less than $200, regardless of whether they are for a Ford, Chevy, or Cadillac. Our fuel lines are easy to install because they match the OE bend shape and are made from high-quality materials.
Tools Required For Replacing Your Fuel Lines
In addition to the fuel lines, you'll need the right tools to replace your fuel lines which include the following:
- •Screwdrivers, pliers and vice grips
- •Socket set and ratchet wrench
- •Jack stands
- •Shop rags, nitrile gloves, and safety glasses
In addition to the basics, you'll want to consider purchasing an inexpensive set of quick-connect tools to remove the fuel lines, which is well worth the money. If you're unsure how the quick connect tools work, check out this video on using a plastic tool to separate the fitting.
Once you've got the parts and tools together, you're ready to tackle the job.
Tips For Installing Fuel Lines
To help you get started, we have instructions and videos showing how to replace the fuel lines. Plus, here are some other tips that may come in handy before you get started:
- •This video shows how to install a nylon repair kit and reuse the original fittings.
- •These links will take you to videos showing the removal of a shipping twist and a shipping bend.
Additionally, here are some other things to consider to make the job easier and safer:
- •Work in a well-ventilated area so you aren't breathing too many gasoline fumes.
- •Keep a fire extinguisher handy because you're working around flammable liquids and vapors.
- •Wear old clothes and nitrile gloves for protection.
Finally and most importantly, you must relieve the fuel pressure before removing the fuel lines. Modern cars use fuel injection, which requires a high-pressure stream of fuel. If you do not relieve the fuel pressure, fuel will spray everywhere as soon as you remove the hoses.
To relieve the fuel pressure, locate and remove the fuse or relay for your car's fuel pump. Then try starting the car. If it won't start or shuts off after a few seconds, you've depressurized the fuel lines. As a last precaution, disconnect the battery, and you'll be ready to start.
