How To Connect Or Disconnect Plastic Quick Connect Fittings
Line fitting types are something you'll want to be familiar with if you plan to replace your transmission lines. The type of line fittings your vehicle has depends on the make and model and their intended use.
“The two main types of connection used to connect the lines to the rest of the system are threaded fittings and quick connect fittings.”
Let's take a look at quick connect vs. threaded fittings, and how to properly connect and disconnect them.
Threaded Transmission Line Fittings
Threaded fittings are exactly as they seem. They have traditional threaded endings with hexagonal heads that require a wrench for removal.
Quick Connect Transmission Line Fittings
- • Have plastic tabs at both ends
- • Do not require special tools to connect
- • May require special tools to disconnect
- • Can be found on all line types
- • Should not be retrofitted where threaded fittings are used
Quick Connect fittings can be found on all types of automotive lines. They make connecting and disconnecting lines far easier than with threaded connections.
It is still important to know how to connect/disconnect them safely. Otherwise, a plastic retaining tab may break, or the connection won’t be secure. The damage may not be immediately apparent, but it will lead to fluid loss and eventual failure, especially in high-pressure lines.
There are several types of Quick Connect lines, but all work similarly. If your lines do not require tools to connect, they are Quick Connect fittings.
Some Quick Connect fittings require a specialized tool to be removed safely. Make sure that you use the required tool to avoid damaging the fittings. Follow our comprehensive installation instructions to ensure you fit your lines correctly, or contact our helpful staff if you have any questions.
