What Is Galfan® Steel Coating?

Are you looking for a set of replacement fuel, brake, or transmission lines? Many aftermarket suppliers claim to have exactly what you need. But not all replacement lines are made from high-quality materials. And most won’t last nearly as long as OEM quality parts.

We know trying to determine which product is best for you can be tricky. Especially when you have to decipher misleading marketing speak. To make your decision easier, we explain the difference between Galfan® steel coating and other materials used for fuel, brake, and transmission lines.

What Are Automotive Lines Made From?

  • •Galvanized Steel
  • •Stainless Steel
  • •Galfan® Coated steel

Galvanized Steel

  • •5-10% Zinc content
  • •Not very durable
  • •Alternatives are more corrosion-resistant

Many aftermarket suppliers claim to offer ‘Galvan’ coated steel. This is simply an abbreviation for galvanized steel. A very common product that is simply zinc-coated steel to prevent premature rust and corrosion. The zinc coating is usually just 5-10% in common hot-dip galvanized steel products.

It is found in countless applications. When it comes to automotive use, this type of galvanized steel is cheap but not particularly long-lasting. LinesToGo doesn’t use basic galvanized steel because of these shortcomings.

Stainless Steel

  • •Chromium and nickel infused steel
  • •Resistant to rust and corrosion
  • •Durable and long-lasting

Stainless steel is also a relatively common product. There are many different grades to suit various applications. LinesToGo uses 304L stainless steel for its lines as it contains 18-20% chromium. This forms a protective oxide layer on the surface of the steel, making it durable and very resistant to rust.

The 10% nickel content in 304L stainless steel further enhances corrosion resistance and toughness at low temperatures. Compared to regular 304 steel, 304L stainless steel has a lower carbon content, making it more suitable for welding.

What Exactly Is Galfan® Coated Steel?

  • •95% zinc content
  • •Very resistant to rust and corrosion
  • •Superior to regular galvanized steel

Galfan® is an acronym of GALvanized FANtastic steel. It is an alternative to standard hot-dipped or electro-galvanized steel and offers superior rust and corrosion protection. The zinc content of Galfan® steel can be as high as 97%. This, combined with 3-5% aluminum and a small amount of mischmetal, delivers a very corrosion-resistant product. Galfan® products are ideal for automotive applications - which is why LinesToGo uses it.

There is just one letter separating these two coating processes, yet the differences are stark. Galfan® coated steel offers the following benefits over regular galvanized steel:

  • •Superior corrosion protection even at a quarter of the coating weight of regular galvanized steel.
  • •Produces better yield per ton used and is a greener technology than a conventional zinc coating.
  • •Provides an ideal surface finish, either exposed or painted.
  • •Superior formability.

Don’t get tricked by shady marketing practices that promote galvanized steel as a superior product. It will cost you more in the long run.

What About Braided Hoses?

For our braided hoses, we use 304L stainless steel braided Teflon or Aramid (Kevlar) braided Teflon. The braiding provides a tough and corrosion-resistant shell, while the Teflon inner hose offers superb flexibility and resistance to chemicals.  Original equipment end forms and fittings ensure a perfect fit. And our lines are pre-bent to match the original items. Making installation far easier.
